What Shank Gym Is

Shank Gym is an independent documentation project centered on endurance racing and the environments those events move through. Race reviews serve as the primary output, integrating lived experience with field observation and research to describe courses, conditions, and context as they are encountered.

How the Work Is Structured

The work on Shank Gym is organized by function, not topic.

Different kinds of writing and documentation serve different roles within the system—recording experience, testing ideas, building structure, or preserving context. These roles cut across subjects rather than belonging to them.

Each piece is tagged with a badge that identifies its function and how it fits into the system. The badge is not decorative; it’s a classification marker.

Topics change. Functions persist.

This structure keeps the project coherent as it grows, without collapsing into categories, feeds, or themes.

Expeditions — race weekends that activate projects and produce reviews

This preserves your Site Map thinking but makes it intelligible.

Post Illusion Press

Post Illusion Press is an independent Substack publication and a long-form writing project focused on art, music, clarity, discipline, and intellectual self-reliance. Essays are written as records of thought — not arguments for engagement, growth, or validation.

Post Illusion Press operates separately from Shank Gym. It is not monetized, offers no services, and does not collect personal data for marketing or resale. The two projects are maintained in parallel: one documents physical practice, the other intellectual work.

Systems

The Systems badge marks work that defines, examines, or stabilizes the underlying structure of Shank Gym.

This is not a project and not a binding event. It does not document a race, an expedition, or a discrete outcome. Instead, it captures the frameworks that make the work possible—how learning is organized, how decisions are made, how experience is converted into durable knowledge, and how the system holds together over long horizons.

Systems pieces operate one level beneath the visible content. They explain why the site is structured the way it is, how its parts interact, and what constraints or principles govern its growth.

This badge signals writing that is architectural rather than narrative: the logic, scaffolding, and internal mechanics that allow the project to persist without collapsing into noise, optimization, or drift.

Shank Gym is part of a small, intentional WebRing — a loose network of independent creators whose work overlaps in discipline, execution, and long-term practice.

Some linked sites offer coaching, training plans, or structured guidance. Shank Gym does not.

These links exist to provide adjacent perspectives, not services, endorsements, or referrals. Each site operates independently, with its own terms, methods, and intent.

Shank Gym remains a documentation space — not a delivery mechanism.

About the Author

Tom Shank is a pseudonym. He has been running and racing since 1982 and has completed over 250 Spartan races, marathons, ultramarathons, and endurance events across every distance in between. He considers himself a consistently average runner and approaches racing as a long-term practice rather than a performance pursuit, using it as a reason to travel, observe new places, and keep showing up. The name is used to keep the focus on the work rather than the person producing it; the writing and documentation here are personal, but the project is not intended as a personal brand.
